Japan 2026 Summary
As I sit in the Narita airport ready to fly home, I can now reflect on my trip.
The Highlights ✨ π―π΅
Tokyo with its neon lights, Shibuya scramble, awesome views from the Tokyo Skytree, Lake Ashi, and cherry blossoms at the Oshinohakki village.
The Shinkansen bullet train - whether it was a 13-minute hop or a cross-country journey, it was fast, smooth, and consistently on time—making travel feel effortless (and slightly futuristic) π, and a bonus Mount Fuji siting.
Kyoto stood out for its history and beauty πΈ. Walking through Kinkaku-ji and the towering paths of Fushimi Inari Taisha felt like stepping into another era. Add in bamboo forests, cherry blossoms, sake, and hands-on experiences like chopsticks, kintsugi, & Teamlabs, and it struck a perfect balance between culture and creativity π¨.
Osaka brought the energy ⚡—street food, quirky attractions, foot onsens, and the sheer fun of places like Universal Studios Japan (weather permitting π§️). Kushikatsu, neon streets, and spontaneous pedicab rides made it feel lively and unpredictable π’.
Hiroshima - Standing before the Hiroshima Peace Memorial and walking through the Museum was powerful in a way that’s hard to describe—equal parts sobering and necessary. The message of peace is everywhere, quiet but unwavering π️.
Miyajima Island added a moment of calm (and mild deer-related chaos π¦), with the iconic Itsukushima Shrine “floating” in the water—easily one of the most picturesque sights of the trip πΈ.
And then there was Disney & Universal π°. Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea were immersive, creative, and uniquely Japanese in their execution. Even the crowds were polite. The rides (when accessible), shows, and attention to detail were top-tier ✨.
The Downfalls (a.k.a. Character Building Moments) π
Long lines and frequent mysterious closures made patience less of a virtue and more of a survival skill.
Weather also had opinions π§️. Rain was not catastrophic—but enough to derail plans and dampen socks. We also managed to miss the earthquake & tsunami.
Navigation mishaps became a theme πΊ️. Missed train stops, wrong buses, Google Maps betrayals—it all added “adventure,” whether we wanted it or not.
Food was a mixed bag π. From wagyu skewers, okonomiyaki, themed Harry Potter meals, to undesirable breakfasts needing a 7-11 back-up plan.
Hotel roulette π¨ - from 14 metres squared room size, bathtubs we couldn’t get into, and Disney park views - we never knew what to expect we were getting.
Overall Experience π
This trip was a blend of ancient tradition and modern precision, where centuries-old shrines coexist with high-speed trains and themed cafΓ©s. It was peaceful one moment, chaotic the next—yet always memorable.
There were moments of awe (temples, mountains, history π―), moments of fun (rides, food, quirky finds π’), and moments of mild frustration (queues, closures, navigation π¬). But that balance is what made it real.
Most importantly, it was a reminder of how much there is to see, learn, and experience—preferably with comfortable shoes and a flexible attitude π.
Final verdict π―
An incredible journey—rich in culture, full of surprises, occasionally inconvenient, but absolutely worth every step & staircaseπΆ♂️.
